ESR is a proxy, and low ESR does not always sound better

The published bands are useful: under 0.01 is great, 0.01 to 0.035 is decent, past 0.1 something is wrong and past 0.3 the capture broke.
What the number does not tell you is whether the error that remains is in a place you can hear. Two captures at the same ESR can sound noticeably different if one of them is wrong in the upper mids and the other is wrong somewhere nobody listens.
There is a thread in the tracker arguing for folding DC offset into the loss function for exactly this reason. Worth reading before treating ESR as a score.

The thing that convinced me was two captures of the same amp at nearly the same number where one was clearly worse. The error was sitting in the upper mids, right where a guitar lives. I still look at it. I just stopped treating it as a ranking.
