Reamp levels: peak about −8 dB, and check for drift

@roomtone · · 1mo

Two things ruin more captures than anything about the model. Levels: peak your reamped signal around −8 dB. Hotter and you clip something in the chain and train the model on the clipping. Quieter and the model learns a smaller part of the amp's range than you meant. Drift: the DI and the reamped return have to line up sample for sample, all the way through. A few samples of drift by the end of a long sweep and the trainer is comparing signals that no longer correspond. Export 24-bit, 48 kHz, mono, and actually look at the two waveforms at the start and the end.

    The drift one has caught me twice, both times on long sweeps, both times invisible until the model came out wrong. Look at the very end of the file, not the beginning. A start that lines up tells you nothing about a finish that does not.
